Anyway, I'm working on a shooter, or as the more common parlance would<br />
say, a "shmup". I really hate that term, but what can you do?<br />
<br />
Oh yeah, "shmup" = shooter from now on.<br />
<br />
"So, a shooter you say?"<br />
Yes. I've always wanted to make my own shooter for quite a while, but now I have enough<br />
of a grasp of GML to make it real. Technically I've made two already,<br />
( http://sgtcrispy.itch.io/ ), but whatever.<br />
<br />
"So what's the plan, man?"<br />
Here's the low down on the project thus far:<br />
<br />
1: Vertical scroller with 8-10 levels.<br />
<br />
2: Not quite NES style graphics. I'm using a 64 color palette, and sticking to a 7<br />
color + transparency scheme for sprites. If you've seen Arnes Famicube project,<br />
( http://www.androidarts.com/palette/Famicube.htm )<br />
Basically I'm a doing a game like that. A few exceptions of course, on-screen<br />
sprite limits, audio limits ect.<br />
<br />
3: SunVox made music and sfx. I've decided to not go ahead and use FamiTracker for the bgm<br />
and sfx, instead I'm switching back to SunVox for the audio. I'll try and keep<br />
to "lo-fi" in general.<br />
<br />
4: It's not a Bullet Hell style shooter. ie: Screen filling pink orb bukkake and large<br />
chested jailbait. Sorrynotsorry. (Rant on this forthcoming...)<br />
<br />
5: Stuff I'm sure I forgot to mention....<br />
<br />
"Enough jibber jabber! Show us the goods!"<br />
Art work: Normal baddies are mostly done. 8 with 2-3 variations. 16-ish? Tweaking to-do.<br />
Boss #1 is under going polish and Boss #2 is still under construction.<br />
Others still in design stage.<br />
Player ship: Tweaking to-do on sprite and weapons.<br />
Background level art: hmm what now... yeah.. slow..<br />
Music: About the same...<br />
Coding: Player controls done. Tweaking baddies.<br />
Weapons system tweaking: 1 main weapon, 5 upgradable sub weapons.<br />
Tile scrolling coding: System is in place but trying to come up with a less tedious way<br />
of doing it. (ds_grid/array or such)<br />
<br />
"Goods! Show! NOW!"<br />
Ah yes. Here's a pic of the current baddie lineup and player ship candidates.<br />
Not much but hey.<br />

<br />
Several years ago I started with a simple black and white game (??) for ios,<br />
then strictly in NES style.<br />
However this project was started in earnest almost a year ago, and has evolved quite<br />
a bit since.<br />
Now, a year later, and it's still incomplete. Other games and ideas had been distracting, but now, true purpose has grabbed a hold and it's full throttle.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Back in the summer my older brother came to visit for a couple of weeks and helped<br />
me hammer out ideas and concepts. He was a major kick in the pants to get this<br />
dream of mine going, and with him getting married in May, I own it to him at the very<br />
least to get an near finished build as a wedding gift. Hopefully I can get an<br />
actual real playable demo released for his birthday which is coming up as well.<br />
<br />
Once this is done, then I can start on Greylands 2...sgtcrispyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802161725655107953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429780829777761980.post-52750925919853525222014-05-17T17:54:00.000-05:002014-05-17T17:56:20.279-05:00...no time like whenever.Haven't done one of these in a while, so what's been happening?<br />
Well, I have gotten updates for Duck Rush and ZTA made up. Duck Rush adds "Hunt Mode". Bit of a homage to Safari Hunt if you will. Never did get in to Duck Hunt.<br />
<br />
ZTA however add quite a bit. Two additonal level, a revamping of the "10 Waves" mode ( different enemy apearences and bosses.), also a massive graphics overhaul and "music improvements".<br />
<br />
Alas, these updates are held back by a rather annoying error when building. So until this little "problem" can be eliminated, I am unable to update. So annoying... Oh well I guess.<br />
<br />
In a attempt to fix it, I've reformted the netbook I've been using for building and hopefully with fresh installs the error will be fixed. /me crosses his fingers.<br />
<br />
In more recent news, I've worked on a 32x32 resolution game for the #lowrezjam over at www.gamejolt.com called Grey Lands.<br />
<br />
http://gamejolt.com/games/adventure/grey-lands/26608/<br />
<br />
I went with an top down action rpg-ish for this, and learned quite a bit. In the process of making it, it turned into a prototype. This time around though it won't be for ios.sgtcrispyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802161725655107953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429780829777761980.post-9862038419863787362013-10-28T21:50:00.003-05:002013-10-28T21:55:47.839-05:00...so RUN AWAY!!!<div class="p1">

<div class="p1">
I've had the idea for this one for awhile now, even before Duck Rush, so I'm glad I finally got it finished. If you like Commanding Missiles and shooting down Invaders from Space, then you should like the gameplay style here.</div>
<div class="p2">
<br /></div>
<div class="p1">
I've been working on updating it to have, among other things, proper universal support. Granted, GM:S does a good enough job on supporting multiple iOS device resolutions, they still need tinkering with.</div>
<div class="p1">
Drawing text goes off screen and gets misaligned, and on 5th gen devices it stretches the screen. Not too bad, but leaving like that would just be lazy (cough duck rush cough).</div>
<div class="p1">
Plus, I've had a number of folks inquiring about an android release.</div>

<div class="p1">
1. No android phone or device. More likely a phone but whatever. Hell, I don't even have my Trac-Phone anymore.</div>
<div class="p1">
2. GM:S requires an extra module for android exporting, and at 200 smackers that will have to wait…</div>
<div class="p1">
3. For what device? It's probably not to much of a hassle supporting multiple device resolutions, but until I can at least get one, I have no idea.</div>
<div class="p1">
Now that's not a knock toward android either. I'm rather "meh" on the whole iOS vs Android debate. I've seen a android or two that I wouldn't mind having, but until I can afford one, it's iOS (by way of iPod Touches and an 1st gen iPad) for now.</div>
<div class="p1">
Shit, I'd like an Ouya while I'm at it. If Locomalito can do it then, dammit, so can I!</div>

I put up a little teaser trailer for my in development game Zombie Tomato Attack.<br />
With any luck it'll be ready for Apple's approval/scrutiny before the end week.<br />

Naturally, I messed up on the new achievements and had to submit 3.1 to Apple so the damn things show up in game center. Hopefull that should be up and ready when Labor Day is done with. Tomorrow maybe, Wednesday?<br />
Here a link to it if you're so inclined.<br />

Anyway, I learned a lot from that simple little game. But now on to bigger and hopefully better things.<br />

Excelsior! or something...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Plus, I dun goofed, and neglected to mention that I not only got the update for Duck Duck done, but had also given it a name change to Duck Rush. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sounds better methinks. Snazzier. With a hint of a cool mountain breeze flowing pass your face and making the butterflies flutter... </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Or, something like that, yeah.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Oh, and Duck Rush is on sale for free for today. :D Once I get the next update and another game out, I'll considering make free permanently, but gotta figure GM:S out first.</div>

<br />
Anyway, I've been working the next version for it so here's a few quick notes...<br />
<br />
1: Widescreen! Landscape looks and plays better than portrait anyway.<br />
2: New levels! Two more levels plus an extra (or two) gameplay variations for each.<br />
3: Improved Graphics! More cow-y cows, pig-ish pigs!<br />
4: ???<br />

<br />
So hopefully, in a day or two it should appear in the iTunes app store. Ready for the masses to scrutinize and even better enjoy.<br />
<br />
"So what is this game you keep blathering on about?"<br />
<br />
Glad you asked fictional person...<br />
<br />
Duck Duck is the name.<br />
Smacking ducks is the game.<br />
Cow, pigs, and birds also appear.<br />
Zipping left and right they must adhere.<br />
Hunting for a secret is for the brave.<br />
If you're lucky you'll be invited to a bump'n rave.<br />
<br />
"ahem"<br />
<br />
So thats the gist of it basically, a simple touch game with blocky pixel graphics and chip-ish style music made in Sunvox.<br />
<br />
I'll post a link when it actually pops up in-store.<br />
<br />
/me cross fingers for soon.<br />
<br />
Now, about those other games I have in the works....sgtcrispyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802161725655107953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429780829777761980.post-66394101641331854342012-12-10T13:01:00.001-06:002012-12-10T13:01:36.163-06:00of the approaching duck hordes? Well, after much hammer banging and hair pulling, I've finally have a app sent off to the Apple Store gatekeeper overseers. Hopefully they will give it their blessing and release it upon the walled garden of delights.<br />
<br />
Only to get lost among the overcrowded masses of the app slums.<br />
<br />
One can only hope.<br />

Yeah, that sounds better.</div>

Since I don't live there, I really can't say with certainty what is going on there. I could mention the goings on that are happening here, but that would be, well, not interesting. At least, I think not. </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">I could be wrong, but country living isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Sure you have the clean(er) air (Unless you count the fire near by that is ending smelly smoke all over), little to no traffic (unless the count all the trucks constantly hauling grain down the road), and of course peace and quite (unless you count the whiny dog, squawking parrot and cat hair everywhere).</span><br />
<div class="p1">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">Just mowing lawns, cleaning garages, pick'n veggies, doing dishes, and watering trees. Some city folk would no doubt jump at the chance to have such a life of ease and simplicity. But if you're a guest in your (near retirement age) parents house, live miles from the skimpy local job market, lack transport, have crushing debt, and scrape by with what little your hosts can spare, country live'n starts to look kinda like weak sauce.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">But hey, living rent free amirite?</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">So the point? Just another bitch and moan session I suppose. Something to write down, edit, and present. Better than letting everything get mushed inside and evaporate into "should have dones". Releasing the noise in my head and filling the silence with it seems more appropriate. </span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">I have done a few things I guess. I did find some old Apple II software of mine that I thought had been long lost. Stumbled across some old audiobook cassettes that had also been lost. Getting better at making tunes. Although that's to be heard I suppose. My art is getting better too. In increments. So there's that.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">Now if can just get this belly downsized a bit...</span></div>

Talk about a whiner, eh?</div><div><br /></div><div>As I write this out I am currently listening to the song "Galileon" by Linde. The album which it appears, Lander, is a great bit of chipmusic released on the 8bitpeoples net label. The album before it, Trenchvent, is also just as groovy. Both make use of FM chips or synths that create FM sounds to a degree that makes you wonder, at least for me, what Sega Genesis game did these songs come from.</div><div><br /></div><div> The reason I mention these, other than the fact they rock, is because I was messing around today with some pixel art in an attempt to make some vehicles for a Herzog Zwei type game I had in mind. After building a little tank or so, I loaded HZ in a emu and watched the demos cycle through a bit to get a better feel for the look of the game.</div><div>Then I searched teh internets a bit for some info on the game itself. I read the wiki and looked at a forums posts here and there and came across a mention of a game called Airmechs.</div><div> </div><div> So, out of curiosity I checked it out. And in doing so, totally destroyed my idea for my own HZ type game.</div><div><br /></div><div> Airmechs looked so amazingly kickass, I immediately threw my hands up in defeat. How in the holy hell could I compete with that? That was damn near the same game I had pictured in my head whenever I thought about HZ coming back from the grave and onto modern systems.</div><div><br /></div><div> Ah, once again I am whining. Sorry about that.</div><div><br /></div><div> Anyway, after having my hopes dashed from seeing that, I began to wonder if I could pull this off. Doubt and uncertainty again clouded my mind. But I was able to pull through it and continue my pixel doodles anyway. I still need to come up with something, and quick but I keep getting different ideas that shove each other around to get my attention. Sooner or later these battling thoughts will settle down at a table come up with a plan of attack, as it were, for a single and concrete idea.</div><div><br /></div><div> Until then, I continue my best efforts to actually do some work every day toward the cause. Of course Skyrim comes out on Friday.</div><div><br /></div><div> Crap...</div><div><br /></div>sgtcrispyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802161725655107953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429780829777761980.post-34294729284607133222011-11-02T22:02:00.002-05:002011-11-02T22:03:55.465-05:00...ooo look teh kitteh!<div class="p1"><span class="s1">The worst part, I think, about beginning to write is trying to get the ideas that are in your head out and onto the page.</span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div><div class="p1"><span class="s1">I'll sit and have these conversations and discussions flowing in my thoughts and never have the fortitude or even guts to put them down. I'll just let them run their course and fade away. </span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div><div class="p1"><span class="s1">Am I afraid to write them down or is it just shear laziness? Hell, I joined a website that promoted writing by having its members write a 50k word novel every November. I want to get it a try but since signing up I've had not a single idea for it. I was going to rewrite a short novel that I had made for a class in high school where we had to actually made a physical book, bindings and all. I suspect that would have been cheating, so I scratched that idea.</span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div><div class="p1"><span class="s1">To be honest my writing has taken a bit of a back seat to my desire to make a game in the coming months. That too is starting to become a difficult task as I am still unsure of what game I want to create. Sidescroller, shoot-em-up, RPG, or action game. Even the method is in question. UDK, Gamemaker, Construct 2, or Stencyl. Never mind that I am not an artist or a musician either. And programming? Buh...</span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div><div class="p1"><span class="s1">When I first got a hair up my ass about wanting to create instead of just watching everyone else, I wanted to make a webcomic of some sort, but again ideas and the fact I can't draw well kept holding me back. It is my apparent lack of ambition keeps me from drawing everyday, practicing the piano tutorials on Garageband everyday, writing about anything everyday.</span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div><div class="p1"><span class="s1">I just looked back at what I just wrote and have to laugh at myself. Three hundred plus words in already and they keep flowing onto the virtual keyboard. </span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div><div class="p1"><span class="s1">Until a thought came and shut the valve off...</span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div><div class="p1"><span class="s1">Anyway, I've been trying to free myself of distractions for a while now. Thinking that will help in my quest for a better life. Boxing up my games for a year. Taking only my absolute favorites with me when I moved as well as only a handful of movies. I brought a large chunk of my book, but barely touched them. I've done more book reading on my iPad than an in a physical book. I look at my computer and wonder if bringing it was a wise choice. Of course without it I couldn't be attempting game creation. Then again, I might not be in the situation that I am now currently residing in either.</span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div><div class="p1"><span class="s1">I can only keep trying everyday, keep forcing myself everyday. If not, failure once again awaits me at the door. And quite frankly, I am getting sick and tired of his visits.</span></div><div class="p2"><span class="s1"></span></div>sgtcrispyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802161725655107953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429780829777761980.post-85637440485885429272011-10-03T11:48:00.001-05:002011-10-03T11:55:34.242-05:00Sour grapes will still make the pill bitter.<br />
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
<span class="s1">Nothing like bitter disappointment and crushing defeat to start your day.</span></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
<span class="s1">No sir, nothing like it. </span></div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
<span class="s1">So, is there a light at the end of the tunnel? Was it ever there to begin with, or was it just a after image, of days long ago, slowly fading away?</span></div>
<div class="p2" style="text-align: left;">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1" style="text-align: left;">
<span class="s1">Or maybe I just looked at the sun for too long...</span></div>

<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">I want to create things. I want to create things that people can enjoy. Things that people can read, hear, or watch. Things that can make them smile. Things that make them happy.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Isn't that what we all really want to do?</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">To scare and make them giggle when they realize they are safe. To sadden so they think more about theirs lives and the ones around them. Or simply just make them laugh at the silliness before them.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">To escape. That's why we do the things we enjoy. To escape from the dull, the difficult, the repetitive.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">We create to escape as well. Perhaps even more so. Since we can't live in our dreams and visions, we create them the best we can with what we can.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">But when something is in your minds eye, and you lack the knowledge, the ability, the skill to let it run free for others to enjoy...</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">It's like letting fruit over ripen on the tree because you cannot afford a taller ladder in which to collect it before it falls to the ground, rotted and sour.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Many plans and schemes are attempted to make the inspirations in our heads form into something tangible or sensory. Often, however, they are either left abandoned in boredom for another shiny vision or are aborted mid development because they do not take to the form that was originally conceived.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Alas the pit filled with the corpses of discarded ideas and thoughts is a sacrifice to the gods of creation that must be made.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Still, I try to create. Buckling down with a lesson or guide that promises to help show the way to the skills that I require to manifest my visions. Bits of knowledge are picked up here and there, slowly increasing the size of my bag of tricks. But it’s never enough to hone a sharp enough edge to cut through the clay and reveal the sculpture that was trapped inside all along.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Someday it be sharp enough. Sharp enough to cut through my own insecurities and doubt. Sharp enough to sever the parts of myself that hold me back from doing the most simplest of things...</span></div>

In all directions, the vast of blanket nothingness spreads further and further. Even as my mind is wiped clean, my body is losing the ability, the will to create, to organize, to even move. I can only watch and listen, hoping all that I consume can fill this void that is slowly laying waste to my mind, body, and soul.<br /> So many thoughts and inspirations swam within the oceans of my mind. So many visions and concepts towered and grew over the landscape of my consciousness. Encroached by the void, the oceans are drying up revealing flat, cracked, sunbaked planes. Views that before would awe and inspire are now lifeless crags of crumbling decay that molder and fill the air with putrid choking dust.<br /><br /> I hate writers block...sgtcrispyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802161725655107953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429780829777761980.post-10531468400488086932011-09-29T14:39:00.004-05:002011-09-29T14:52:14.492-05:00Pep at 2 p.m.Brewing some coffee, waiting for a call that may never come, and wondering if I should get some creamer.<br /><br />Decisions, decisions.<br /><br />Cheap, crappy creamer, or the pricey, tasty kind.<br /><br />Will it break the bank? Only the most common and skill-less ones are out and about. I have a snare waiting and ready for one that seems to be within view but, I think it sees me and and is wary about moving closer to the bait I've laid out for it.<br /><br />The more common ones give even less that what I receive now and would just be a detriment to the cause. That or they are of such a degrading breed that only the young or the most in need would take on.<br /><br />While my hunts have been fruitless, I have been attempting to breed my own. My skills in sector are limited, and any useful results wouldn't come about until months or (gulp) years of private study and training.<br /><br />One can only hope for the best at this juncture, and press on diligently.<br /><br />Tally ho and such forth.sgtcrispyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802161725655107953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2429780829777761980.post-11788953951631459732011-01-29T21:20:00.000-06:002011-01-29T21:21:18.701-06:00I'll post when I have something worth posting...sgtcrispyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06802161725655107953noreply@blogger.com0
